This chapter recounts how the world
became divided into nations, towns, villages, tribes with different languages and
culture. After the fall of man, chapter one reveals that man became sinful in
nature. While out of the garden of Eden the multiplication of man also let to
the multiplication of sin on earth and God regretted why He created man (Gen
4:1, 6:4-8). He decided to destroy everything on earth except Noah and his
family because he had found favour in the eyes of God.
After destroying everything on earth
through a flood, the family of Noah, that was spared, continued the
multiplication process. So the inhabitants of the earth still lived as one big
extended family with same language, custom and culture (Gen 11:1). This big
family were so united that the decided to build a tower (The Tower of Babel) that
will reach heaven. God, seeing their determination to build this tower concluded
that nothing will be impossible with them if they continue to exist as one big
family with same language, culture and custom. God confused them by causing
them to speak different languages (Gen 11: 6-7).
Since they could not understand each
other’s language, they had to go their separate ways (Gen 11:8). Those who
could understand each other grouped themselves and moved away. This led
subsequently to the creation of continents, countries, towns, villages, tribes,
ethnic groups, cultures, political and legal systems and religious believes.
