CHAPTER 5: The World in the Word- The
New Testament
This chapter, with John17:4 as key
verse, continues to reveal the world in the Biblical eye of the New Testament
from the time the birth of Jesus Christ was announced right up to when he died
and resurrected. It demonstrates that the coming of our Lord and savior Jesus
Christ, through the virgin Mary, was for the salvation of all the people living
on earth (Luke 2:10-14). This divine mission was further emphasized on the day
of His dedication in the temple (Luke 2:31-32) and by Caiaphas a High Priest of
the Jews (John 11:50-52).
Furthermore, John the Baptist describes
Jesus as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29) and
also as the light of the world (John 1:9-10). These attributes of Jesus Christ were
manifested in His conduct and teachings. For example, Jesus feed 5000 men to
demonstrate God’s love towards mankind. He also preached the gospel to the Samaritan
woman and the people of Samaria, thus implying He came for the salvation of
both the Jews and Gentiles
Jesus’ death on the cross was a sign
to show that he had completed His mission of redeeming the world and
reconciling it to its creator. After His resurrection, He appeared to His disciples
with an assignment (the Great Commission) which is to spread the good news to
the ends of the world.
